Sold out of honey for the year, unless the bees need a harvest next month before I get them ready for winter, but that’s pretty unlikely and I need to do mite treatment. New bees are settling in slowly and haven’t filled their first super yet.
Chickens are slowing down slightly due to molting, I’m giving them supplements and treats but they only lay about 3 dozen per week now. First come first serve.
Zucchini and other summer squash, and cooking greens start this week! I’ve been keeping stuff in the fridge because greens just wilt in the heat no matter what I do, but I have chard, kale, shungiku. For summer squash I grow regular zucchini (which everyone has too much of), but also friulana and trombone Italian types which are a bit unique. The trombone squash are HUGE and the friulana have more of a rich flavor than regular zucchini or trombone.
The rainstorm last Thursday really killed my peach and apple harvest. Out of two huge peach trees I got exactly ONE sad little peach and there’s only a few green apples still hanging on. I’m thinking about soap? What do you guys think about castile soap? I used to make all olive oil soaps but they were a bit soft. Traditionally coconut oil is added to harden the soap but I’m allergic to coconut so I was planning to try a mix of castor and safflower oils instead. The soap is made as a large batch and once it’s fully cured I grate it, melt with a little water, and add fragrance and color and whatnot.
Greens $3 / bunch
Summer squash $2 each
Eggs $6 / dozen as usual
